The Secret to
Selling Fast
Selling a pet online requires more than just a clear image; it requires an emotional connection.
Buyers scroll through hundreds of listings, and a high-quality “hero shot” is often the only reason they stop. You don’t need a DSLR to get professional results. Here is how to turn your smartphone into a high-end camera.
1. Lighting is Everything
Artificial light creates harsh shadows and yellow tints. Use Natural Light near a window. Cloudy days are the best “softbox” for fur. Avoid the flash at all costs!
2. Get on Their Level
Don’t look down! Sit, kneel, or lie flat. Shooting at the pet’s eye level creates immediate intimacy and makes the buyer feel like they are meeting them face-to-face.
3. Master Portrait Mode
Use your phone’s Portrait Mode to keep the pet sharp while softly blurring the background. This hides messy rooms and makes the pet the undisputed star of the listing.
4. Focus on the Eyes
Tap the screen on the eyes to lock focus. Look for a tiny reflection of light (the catchlight) to make them look alive and healthy. Sharp eyes = Sold pet!
5. Bribe and Squeak
A bored pet looks bored. Use a squeaky toy or treats near the lens for that perfect head tilt. Use Burst Mode to capture action without the blur.
6. Background Contrast
Declutter first! No laundry or shoes. Ensure contrast: use a light background for dark pets and a colorful one (like green grass) for white pets to make them “pop”.
The “Sales Gallery” Checklist
Include these 4 essential shots to build 100% buyer confidence.
The Hero Shot
Portrait headshot looking directly at the camera lens. This is your thumbnail!
The Full Body
Shows scale, health, and physical condition. No surprises for the buyer.
The Personality
Captures them playing or doing a unique quirk. Shows their temperament.
The Scale Shot
Pet next to a person or object so the buyer knows their real physical size.
